Mission: Kura

Yesterday I helped a friend of mine assemble her son’s new bed which answers to the name of Kura and hails from Sweden. Everything went quite well except for one missing slat from the bed base(which was later found hiding in the car) and some minor and major language problems. My friend originally is from Spain but lives here for about ten years now so she’s quite fluent in German. Her mother on the other hand who is visiting at the moment only speaks Spanish, no German, no English, just Spanish. Unfortunately I only speak a little Italian but no Spanish except for maybe three to five words. Well, as you can imagine, that was a lot fun :-)). Especially with the German/Spanish versions of words like Allen key or keyseat. Luckily we all have two healthy hands so we used them to communicate. ;-) Oh, and I also have to mention the Spanish specialties that were provided, yummy big time!!!

Spoilt for choice

I’m at work right now looking for a rental moving truck for my friend and colleague. She’s in the middle of a pretty ugly divorce and doesn’t have a lot of time on her hands with all that paperwork and a little boy to take care of. Man, I didn’t know there were so many makes and models to choose from let alone the different weight specifications. Phew!

Some great music

If you like melodic pop-rock songs you should listen to Daniel Ghattas’ songs, a singer/songwriter from Montréal, Québec, Canada.

PAUSE … PAUSE … “Dann bekommen Sie also noch 5,50 € zurück!”

Ähhhm???

Hirnlos

Easter impressions

I’m back from my 5-day-Easter-trip and boy, was it snowy. That didn’t keep us from hiking at least 10 miles per day though which got pretty exhausting sometimes especially in the deep snow areas. The rest of the time we spend skiing and sledding, ok, just sledding in my case, my invalid knee doesn’t like skiing unfortunately but it was a lot of fun anyway. Haven’t seen that much snow in at least 15 years. On our way back it got a little too much though, we were surprised by a massive snow storm so that we had to pull over on the Autobahn and wait till it was over, quite dangerous, but we made it home safely.

Leicht verrutschte Hauptstadt

Nee, is’ klar!! *headdesk*

Smart move

This is the forecast for the next days here in my region: mixture of rain and snow, low 33F, chance of precip 70%.

Mmmmhhh, I removed my snow tires the day before yesterday. Well done!!! *patting myself on the shoulder*

Emma

Last night we had a visitor, Emma. She came by at around 2.30 am and still hasn’t left. But she isn’t as strong anymore as last night. By the way, Emma is the hurricane that’s currently moving across parts of Germany with wind speeds up to 94 mph. I guess it goes without saying that I didn’t get much sleep last night,  rooftiles were falling from the surrounding houses, oh, and did I mention I live about a hundred yards air-line distance from a fire station? Do I have to say more? ;-) I should go back to bed now, it’s pretty quiet at the moment and the helicopters are gone, too. Good “night”!

A whiff of snow

What? Snow??? Oh yeah, right, it’s winter! This t-shirt weather the last couple of weeks almost made me forget. ;-) Not that I’m complaining, don’t like the cold anyway.

You know you’re German if…

My colleague just send this over and I must admit some of them apply to me *cough* ;-).

You know you’re German if…

You separate your trash into more than five different bins.
Your front door has a sign with your family name made from salt dough.
You carry a “4You” backpack.
You eat a cold dinner at 6pm.
You call your cell phone “handy” and a projector “beamer”.
You have no problems with nude beaches and saunas.
You have asked your Asian-American friend, “No, but where are you *really* from?”
You have gotten splinters from environmentally friendly toiled paper.
You call an afternoon stroll “Nordic Walking”.
You are shocked when you have to pay for dental care.
You own a pair of jeans in a color other than blue.
People start talking about Hitler and Hofbräuhaus when you tell them where you’re from.
Tenth grade was all about dancing lessons.
You work 40 hour weeks and have 6 weeks of vacation a year, but complain about hard times.
Your childhood diet consisted of Alete and Zwieback. Your college diet consisted of Miracoli and Döner.
You were educated about sex by Dr. Sommer.
You yell at people for jaywalking.
You grew up watching “Löwenzahn” and “Die Sendung mit der Maus”. And Baywatch.
You think college tuition is an outrage.
You routinely go 100mph on the highway and tailgate heavily.
On your last day of high school you made your teachers sing Karaoke and jump through hoops.
You wear brown leather shoes.
Your first audio tape was Benjamin Blümchen and Bibi Blocksberg.
You have ended an English sentence with “…, or?”.
You can tell at least one Manta joke.
You’re a college student in your 11th year.
Your first sexual experience was on Sat1, Saturday night at 11pm.
You spent hours in school learning to pronounce “th”.
You expect chocolate in your shoes on December 6th.
You complain that in other countries everything is dirty
